Laura Wood, Founder of the Fit For Our Future Campaign, Reflects on the Latest ISPA UK Home Adaptations Report
The launch of the What’s Next for Adaptations ISPA report is a big moment for anyone who cares about creating homes that work for people at every stage of life.
It lays bare the reality we’ve been talking about for years, that too many people wait until crisis point to get the adaptations they need, that the process is often slow and stressful, and that design is still treated as an afterthought rather than a starting point.
For me, reading the report felt like someone had bottled up the conversations I’ve had with families, contractors, and housing teams over the past decade. It was equal parts frustrating because change is so overdue, and encouraging because it shows exactly where we can do better.
The report confirms that:
Too many people wait until crisis point before getting adaptations, with delays often caused by fragmented systems, unclear responsibilities, and inconsistent funding.
Where you live and your housing tenure can determine if and when you get help – creating a postcode lottery that leaves some people waiting months or years.
Healthy life expectancy is falling, meaning more people will live longer with illness or reduced mobility, driving up demand for safe, adaptable homes.
The human and financial cost of delay is huge – every £1 spent on adaptations can save £6 in health and social care costs, yet budgets are often cut or not ring-fenced.
Design is still treated as an afterthought – the report calls for inclusive, beautiful, and future-proofed housing from the start, not just retrofits in emergencies.
It’s a clear message: adaptations aren’t a luxury – they are essential infrastructure that lets people live safely, independently, and with dignity.
Why I Started the Fit for our Future Campaign
The Fit For Our Future campaign was born from something deeply personal. My grandma Sheila was determined to stay in her own home for as long as she could. But when she needed adaptations, the products available looked clinical, cold, and completely out of place in her home.

I realised that accessible didn’t have to mean institutional. That’s why I started Invisible Creations, to design products that keep people safe without compromising on style, dignity, or the feeling of home.
Fit For Our Future is simply the bigger vision, making sure no one has to wait until they’re in crisis before their home meets their needs.
The Power of Collaboration
Thanks to PROCare, Invisible Creations, and Foundations, the campaign is turning ideas into real change.
PROCare gets beautiful, accessible and future proofed bathrooms and wet rooms, fitted quickly and reliably.
Foundations helps local authorities, contractors, and families navigate the adaptation process.
Invisible Creations designs products you’d be proud to have in your home, even if you didn’t need them yet.
The ISPA report proves what we already know, when housing, health, and care work together, people’s lives improve dramatically.
Let’s Make Every Home Fit for Our Future
The report is a call to action. We can’t keep treating UK home adaptations as a last resort. We need to build and adapt homes that are safe, beautiful, and ready for whatever life throws at us, long before someone reaches breaking point.
